AgroSpace: Harnessing Space Technologies for Agriculture

The consortium behind the European AgroSpace project met on July 15 and 16 in Porto (Portugal), at the invitation of the wine company Symington. Co-funded by the Interreg Sudoe program, this initiative brings together 12 partners—including Aerospace Valley—around a common goal: to accelerate the adoption of space technologies in agriculture to address climate challenges.

During the meeting, consortium members visited one of the project’s experimental sites. It is in the heart of the Douro Valley, within Symington’s vineyards, that AgroSpace is testing new irrigation solutions supported by Earth observation. The goal is to refine existing tools to optimize water management in viticulture.

These two days of work also marked a key milestone in identifying the challenges currently faced by agricultural stakeholders. The analysis of these on-the-ground needs will be used to design concrete use cases for the upcoming call for space-based solutions, scheduled for late 2026. Led by Aerospace Valley, this future call will aim to identify SMEs in the space sector capable of providing tailored technological solutions. It will also help build bridges between these innovation providers and end users in the agricultural sector.
